BIOMA scope

Biophilic design and integration of planting systems, in collaboration with 100Giardini.

Starting constraints
  • Keep circulation clear across a 1,250 m² former factory.
  • Preserve flexibility in operational areas.
  • Keep the existing industrial identity legible.
Published evidence
R&D office area
1.250 m²
Break and recovery area
70 m²
Planting target

The published evidence covers status, scale, design choices and the available photographic record. No unmeasured performance outcomes are claimed.

What this project illustrates

Biophilic office design: integrating planting, circulation and break areas while respecting the existing building. The documented contribution concerns planting systems and their spatial relationships, not a full refurbishment attributed to BIOMA.

01 / THE PROJECT

Nature becomes part of the working environment

The R&D offices reinterpret the workplace as a sequence of different conditions rather than a uniform field of desks.

Planting, natural light and legible routes help distinguish focused work, informal exchange and short pauses while maintaining continuity across the floor.

02 / READING THE PLACE

A workplace must support more than one way of working

The project reads movement, visual exposure and the need for concentration together. Shared areas remain easy to find, while planted thresholds give quieter settings a clearer boundary.

The winter garden introduces a recognisable centre and a different sensory condition within the office.

Planting is spatial infrastructure, not an accessory

03 / DESIGN CHOICES

Each choice supports orientation, focus or recovery

The project coordinates layout, light, planting and material so that the workplace remains clear while offering different levels of stimulation.

  1. 01
    A legible sequence

Routes connect teams and shared functions without turning circulation into residual space.

  2. 02
    Distributed nature

Planting appears at thresholds, pauses and shared areas, creating continuity without obstructing views.

  3. 03
    Places to decompress

The winter garden and smaller green settings offer short pauses between demanding activities.

  4. 04
    Materials at human scale

Timber, tactile surfaces and controlled light temper the technical character of the workplace.

04 / WORKING EVERY DAY

The workplace can support concentration without separating people

Different settings allow people to choose where to focus, meet or pause. The office remains connected, but it is no longer perceptually uniform.
